outpatient muscle-sparing total hip replacement

Hip replacement surgery is a highly effective treatment for individuals suffering from chronic hip pain due to osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, fractures, avascular necrosis, or other degenerative joint diseases.

Dr. Sumko performs total hip replacements using the highly acclaimed Direct Superior Approach.  He spent an extra year in fellowship to learn and perfect the direct superior approach.  This approach allows for an accelerated recovery as well as no hip precautions.  Dr. Sumko was trained in all of the approaches during residency and has found that this approach has given his patients the best results.  The procedure involves removing the damaged hip joint and replacing it with a prosthetic implant made from highly durable materials that mimic natural joint movement, by sparing muscles and giving no hip precautions.

This advanced surgical approach restores mobility, reduces pain, and allows patients to regain an active lifestyle with a faster recovery and improved long-term joint function.  Often the patient will be discharged from the recovery room with a walker and will utilize the walker only as needed for a day or two.
