INJECTIONS & TREATMENTS FOR HIP ARTHRITIS

Hip arthritis pain is commonly manifest in the groin area.  Trochanteric bursitis pain is commonly manifested on the lateral or outside of the hip.  Dr. Sumko and his team will be sure to evaluate whether the hip pain you are experiencing is coming from inside the joint or on the outside.  There are multiple causes for groin or hip joint pain.  Hernias, ovarian cyst, labral tears, referred back pain, avascular necrosis, or hip arthritis.  Through x-ray and MRI a proper diagnosis is made.  Depending on what is causing the pain the following are conservative treatments for hip arthritis:

treatment for hip arthritis
  1. Activity modification and weight loss. Reducing the forces through your arthritic hip will decrease pressure and pain.
  2. Physical therapy to strengthen muscles around the hip joint and low back is another option to help treat hip arthritis conservatively.
  3. Anti-inflammatories are options to decrease inflammation systemically and within the joint.
  4. Corticosteroid injections can be injected into your hip joint using ultrasound guidance done by Dr. Sumko’s physician assistant. Injecting a steroid can be therapeutic as well as diagnostic.  Other injectable options into the hip joint are PRP, stem cells, and hyaluronic acid.  These can be discussed with Dr. Sumko or his physician assistant,
